Malbec-Off

I had a Malbec tasting at home. Between Albany John and my own tastebuds. I totally dig tempranillos, but there just isn't a whole lot of selection in the Albany area liquor stores. But we do have a bunch of Malbecs to try.

Why I like Malbecs:
They are low on tannins (low bitterness)
Juicy flavors
Kind of sweet, without being at girly-drink levels of sweetness

On the left, we have Sensual Malbec from Mendoza. It was about $8 at All Star Wine in Latham. On the right, we have Las Acequias Malbec, also from Mendoza, aged in Oak from 2007. It was about $13.

Sensual was okay - it had a tart fruitiness and was pretty light. I imagine this would be better suited to warmer temperatures - summer/spring and sangria kind of weather.

Las Acequias was rich and velvety. So good. VELVETY. So tasty for temperatures below 50F. Rich, rounded flavors. It made the Sensual seem like an alcoholic juice box by comparison.

I love this! More wine posts please. Now all you need to do is find two more people and two more bottles of wine so you can really do a proper tasting with four glasses.

You can do it. I believe in you.
